NP job hunting can be overwhelming. It took me almost a year after graduating from NP school to accept my first job offer. Even then, I rescinded my acceptance and switched to another job before I even started because it was not the right fit for me.

Before you accept an NP job, make sure you understand the entire offer, not just the salary. Here are the things you need to ask the recruiter:

* Base pay: Hourly or salaried?
* Work hours & shifts: 3x12s? 4x10s? 5x8s?
* PTO: How many paid vacation days or hours?
* Retirement match: How much does the employer contribute?
* CME benefits: How much money and paid time do you get for conferences, CEs, and training?
* Health insurance: How much does the employer cover?
* Bonuses & wRVU pay: Sign-on bonus? Productivity or quality bonus? Pay per wRVU or volume?
* OT & differentials: What is the overtime rate? Any evening, night, or weekend differential?
* Holiday/weekend coverage: How often are you required to work them?
* Malpractice insurance: Occurrence-based or claims-made? If claims-made, is tail coverage included?
* License & DEA reimbursement: Will they pay for your licenses, DEA registration, and renewals? These get expensive.
* Student loan benefits: Any repayment or assistance programs?
* Admin time: Do you get protected non-patient-facing time for charting and other tasks?
* Call requirements: Is there on-call coverage? How often?
* EMR & AI tools: What EMR do they use? Do they provide a scribe, dictation service, or other efficiency tools?
* Commute time: This is a big one for me. How long will it take to get to work and back home? Your commute becomes part of your work-life balance.

The highest-paying NP job is not always the best job. Look at the entire compensation package, workload, expectations, benefits, and quality of life before you sign.

I enjoyed precepting Madelene, FNP student, and supporting her clinical journey. This was my first time precepting an NP student. Throughout my 19-year nursing career, I have precepted and mentored many RNs, but this time, I wanted to give back to the NP community.

I am where I am today because of the mentors, physicians, and nurse practitioners who so graciously taught and precepted me. Precepting Madelene was my opportunity to pay it forward.

During her time with me, Madelene gained experience in a mix of urgent and primary care. I challenged her to approach each patient holistically by considering their overall health and putting together the different pieces of why they were sick, much like completing a puzzle to see the whole picture.

I encouraged her to consult current guidelines from verified sources and use that evidence to develop her clinical conclusions and treatment plans. At the same time, I taught her to personalize those plans according to each patient’s needs and circumstances.

I shared to Madelene that a great NP involves more than applying evidence, clinical guidelines, and best practices. It also requires us to be conscientious, empathetic, and attentive to each patient’s individual circumstances.

We discussed the importance of considering social determinants of health, including a patient’s ability to access primary or specialty care. We focused on making appropriate referrals and, whenever possible, following through on the patient’s care after leaving my clinic.

I also emphasized the value of active listening, explaining health information clearly, offering reassurance, and managing expectations. Patients may come to us with concerns shaped by AI or unreliable information online. As NPs, we have a responsibility to be a trusted source of factual, scientific, and evidence-based information while helping patients feel confident in the care they receive.

Probably my biggest flex this year so far is losing 20lbs and being able to squeeze back in to this XS Figs scrubs and sweater again. From 167lbs ➡️ 147lbs.

Scrub pair are 6 years old, sweater is 3 years. Keeping them until the last thread falls off, unless @wearfigs sponsors a new set for me 😭 🤩

I am proud to share that I am now a Certified Global Nurse Consultant (CGNC).

For years, friends and colleagues encouraged me to pursue this certification, especially my trusted friend and mentor, Dr. Jasper Tolarba, who developed and championed it during his time at CGFNS, now Trumerit. I now see it as a natural extension of my lifelong commitment to advancing the nursing profession and advocating for internationally educated nurses (IENs).

My global nursing journey began in 2014, when I was tapped as a consultant by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education to support NCLEX implementation, nursing curriculum development, and preparing nurses for global practice.

When I moved to the United States, that work continued.

Since founding Aspire RN in 2019, I have partnered with healthcare organizations and global nursing leaders to develop NCLEX preparation, scholarships, onboarding initiatives, and workforce development programs that have supported nurses from more than 40 countries.

Today, I serve as President of the Society of Internationally Educated Nurses and Nursing Allies (SIENNA). Through SIENNA, I founded the Fellowship of the Society of Internationally Educated Nurses, bringing together global nursing leaders, educators, researchers, policymakers, and advocates to advance collaboration, mentorship, and leadership for IENs worldwide.

I have always believed that showing up matters. We cannot change the conversations that shape our profession if we are absent from the spaces where decisions are made.

IENs make up a significant portion of the healthcare workforce in many high-income countries, yet we remain underrepresented in leadership and policy. Building a stronger global nursing workforce requires the voices of those who have long been essential to it.

My advocacy is rooted in my own journey and driven by a commitment to ensure that every internationally educated nurse is recognized, supported, and empowered to lead.

This certification is another step toward ensuring that the expertise, leadership, and voices of IENs help shape the future of the global nursing profession. #CGNC #globalnurse #IEN @trumeritorg @icn_npapn_2026
